Vinyl Decking and Aluminum Railings
On this “vinyl decking” project the deck was done partially by the homeowner years ago and never quite finished. We were called in to get the vinyl decking looking beautiful and make it safe for a large wedding the clients were hosting in only three weeks time. We were able to muster our crews and got to work immediately. The first thing that needed to be addressed was the structural framing. The existing joists were under sized for the span and there was no blocking at the mid points. This made the deck very bouncy and unsafe for having a large party. We doubled up the joists and installed the solid blocking. You could immediately feel the difference, the deck was extremely firm and had no bounce to it. We then installed additional backing at the front of the deck so that when we installed the front mounted aluminum glass railings they would be rigid and safe for the whole family to enjoy.
After the framing was made safe and up to the B.C. Building code we installed a 66 mil TufDek vinyl decking, the color is Supreme Pearl. “Vinyl Decking” is a very low maintenance and waterproof material making it a perfect choice for this client. One of the problems that they had before was that the gutter from the roof had a down-pipe that was going through the deck. This was causing some rot issues and was very unattractive. We installed a special PVC coated drain and had the down pipe drain into it. This made the deck penetration water tight and allowed any debris that was coming off the roof get trapped at the drain and prevent the drain tile from getting plugged. The clients now have a vinyl decking that can be easily cleaned with a quick hose down and it’s ready to enjoy.
Stairs off Deck:
The client had built some stairs off the deck but they had a few problems. The rise and treads were not the same measurements from top to bottom and as you can see they had no railings. We totally removed the old stairs and built a new set making all the rise and run the same. We then installed a fascia board on the sides to trim them out and installed a pair of aluminum picket railings. Now the stairs are extremely safe and their party guests can run up and down them worry free.
