In Vancouver’s rainy climate its important to follow a few critical design elements when doing Railings for decks. If the deck is a acting as a roof and keeping the area below dry it’s always advisable to attach the railings on the side of the deck. The reason for this is that most leaks occur on decks and roofs when a screw or hole has penetrated the waterproofing material. By attaching the railings to the side (ie. Fascia boards) the screws are now penetrating a vertical surface which see’s way less water.
In some situations doing a side/fascia mounted railings not possible because of fascia size, or the need to re-use existing older aluminum railings. When this is the case we have a few solutions. One of the solutions is called pedestal pads, this is were we elevate the base plate of the deck railings as seen in this picture.
Arbutus sundecks offers a wide variety of custom railings in both glass and pickets to accentuate the design of your house.
