Hiring a qualified exterior stair contractor can make a huge difference in the look and functionality of your curb appeal. At Arbutus Sundecks we have built thousands of stairs and know what it takes to make your stairs attractive, low maintenance and extremely functional. When laying out the stairs its critical that all the rise and runs are the same throughout the set of stairs. We also have to work within the B.C. Building code to have the rise and run a certain measurement. The best measurements for exterior stairs are 7″ for the rise and 11″ for the run (tread). For materials we like to use pressure treated 2″x 12″ for the stringers, and pressure treated wood for the the treads. We then like to use a combed spruce 2″x 12″ for the outside trim work, this can be painted any color the client wants to compliment the exterior of their house. For the railings we use either a cedar railing or a aluminum stair railing this will ensure that the railings are safe and long lasting .
On these exterior stairs we used cedar to complement the railings of the deck and it was in the style of the house. For the top rail we used a clear cedar 2″x4″, the pickets are a tight knot 1″x4″ cedar. When we work on the stair design it’s important to take the style of the house and it’s surroundings that way they become more than just a functional structure they are also an architectural detail that adds to the over all look of your house.
